Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has described the late former governor, Cornelius Adebayo, as a selfless statesman and principled leader who left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s political history.
Speaking at the wake-keep ceremony for the late Adebayo in Ilorin on Friday, the governor praised his courage, humility, and commitment to public service, describing him as “a great leader, a bridge, and a shepherd who played very important roles at different moments of our history.”
Governor AbdulRazaq, represented by his deputy, Elder Kayode Alabi, said Adebayo’s leadership style and integrity made him a hero of democracy and good governance. “History will never forget how he acted with moral courage and humility, making him a hero of the people and good governance,” he said.
The governor noted that Adebayo’s life was a reminder that true leadership is about service to God and humanity. “As we mourn his departure, we are reminded that life is a fleeting journey, and what matters is a legacy of serving God and humanity,” he added.
Family members and friends paid glowing tributes to the late elder statesman, describing him as a man of deep faith, compassion, and unity. One of his daughters, Bimbo Adewoye, said, “My father dedicated his life to God, his family, and humanity. He believed anywhere he found himself was God’s making. He loved the family and promoted unity among his children.”
The event drew dignitaries from across political and social circles, including former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; and Kwara First Lady, Ambassador Prof. Olufolake AbdulRazaq.
Others in attendance were Senator Umar Sadiq (Kwara North); House of Representatives member, Raheem Tunji Ajulọ-opin; Chief Judge of Kwara State, Justice Abiodun Adebara; Commissioner of Police, CP Ojo Adekimi; NACCIMA President, Alhaji Jani Ibrahim; State APC Chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi; Chairman, NHIA, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe; the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu; and the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye Orumogege III.
