Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has died after collapsing in his office in Yenagoa on Thursday, December 11, 2025, according to family and media sources. He was 60 years old.
The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. when Ewhrudjakpo suddenly fell ill while conducting official duties at Government House. Staff and aides immediately called for medical help, and he was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa.
Medical personnel at the FMC worked to stabilise him upon arrival, but despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead shortly after entering the hospital’s emergency unit, family sources confirmed.
Eyewitnesses said the scene at the medical centre grew tense after the deputy governor was brought in. Security personnel cordoned off the area, and senior government officials visited to check on the situation.
No official cause of death has been released. Several reports suggest the collapse may have been linked to a possible cardiac-related medical emergency, but this has not been confirmed by medical authorities.
Ewhrudjakpo was born on September 5, 1965, and served as Bayelsa State’s deputy governor since February 2020. He previously represented Bayelsa West in the Senate before his appointment as deputy governor.
Political and community leaders have begun issuing statements expressing shock and mourning following the news of his death. A formal statement from the Bayelsa State Government was not available at the time of reporting.
His passing marks a sudden end to a long career in public service. Tributes from colleagues highlight his active role in state governance and his presence in key decision-making before his collapse.
Further details, including funeral arrangements and official government statements, are expected to be released in the coming days.
