Schools in four local government areas of Kwara State have closed after fresh security concerns in parts of Kwara South. The order followed an emergency directive from the Ministry of Education and the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers.
The NUT chairman, Yusuf Wahab Agboola, issued the notice on Wednesday. He instructed all schools in Isin, Irepodun, Ifelodun and Ekiti to shut until authorities give new guidance. He said the union acted because of “security challenges ravaging the area.” School heads were told to comply at once.
The closure came hours after Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq visited Eruku in Ekiti Local Government Area. Soldiers have taken control of security operations in the community after Tuesday’s attack. The governor toured the area with senior security officers and met church members. He said both the state government and the federal administration were working to restore order.
AbdulRazaq commended the response of the military and other security agencies. He said their quick action limited the damage. He also asked residents to support ongoing operations. He noted that intelligence efforts now involve local vigilantes and traditional leaders to protect border towns in Kwara South.
Tension rose again on Friday after armed men kidnapped two community leaders from Oreke in Ifelodun. The victims, Chief Yahaya Majeobaje Owolabi and Baba Oja Yahaya Adeniyi, were seized on their way to a security meeting in Baba-nla. Hunters and vigilantes began a search soon after, but the abductions deepened concern over safety in the region.
Teachers in the affected councils said fear remains high. Some confirmed that two teachers and the daughter of another teacher were kidnapped during the Eruku attack. The union has urged members to pray for the victims and for calm to return to the area.
