The University of Ilorin and Kwara State University have joined the nationwide strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Both institutions reached the decision after holding separate congresses on Monday.
The Chairman of ASUU, University of Ilorin chapter, Dr. Alex Akanmu, confirmed the development in an interview with Vanguard. He said the union at the institution was fully aligned with the directive from the national body.
“We are committed to the ideals of the strike, so we have joined the nationwide strike,” he said.
Similarly, the ASUU Chairman at Kwara State University, Dr. Abdulganiyu Salau, said the decision followed resolutions reached during the union’s congress.
“We are part of the agreement of the national body, so this time around we have joined. It was the declaration we made after our congress today,” Salau said.
The strike, called by ASUU’s national leadership, seeks to press the federal government to meet long-standing demands, including improved funding for public universities and implementation of previously signed agreements.
Academic activities at both universities have since been suspended in compliance with the union’s directive.
