Examinations at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) were disrupted on Monday after members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) stormed lecture halls to enforce compliance with the union’s nationwide strike.
Witnesses said academic staff interrupted ongoing exams, directing students and invigilators to vacate the halls. The action followed a national directive from ASUU to begin a two-week warning strike across all public universities.
The disruption caused confusion on campus as students, some already seated for examinations, were asked to leave immediately.
The nationwide strike, declared by ASUU’s National Executive Council, is aimed at pressing the federal government to address outstanding issues, including unpaid allowances, university funding, and implementation of past agreements.
As of Monday evening, the UNIBEN management had not released an official statement on the incident.
