The Nigeria Police Force says a ₦100 million transfer into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of outgoing Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, was made in error and has been returned to the Anambra State Government.

The police response followed claims circulating online that the money was paid from Anambra State’s security vote account into Victor Egbetokun’s account. The allegation drew public attention and calls for an explanation from the police authorities.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Monday, police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the transaction was quickly detected and reversed. He said the payment was not authorised and did not benefit the recipient.

“You could remember when he (Omoyele Sowore) said ₦100 million was paid into the account of the son of the IGP. I called the son of the IGP immediately to know what was going on, and he explained,” Hundeyin said.

According to Hundeyin, Victor Egbetokun noticed the unexpected credit and instructed his account officer to return the money at once. He said the reversal was completed immediately after the alert was received.

“He printed out his statement of account. He showed me. The young man was forced to close down that account. He has written a petition to the EFCC for that allegation to be investigated,” Hundeyin added.

The police spokesperson described the incident as a banking error and said the full amount was returned to the Anambra State Government shortly after the transfer. He said the police welcomed scrutiny of the matter and supported an independent investigation to clear any doubts.
