Kwara North leaders have renewed their demand for the state’s governorship to rotate to their district in 2027. The position was affirmed on Wednesday after a stakeholders’ meeting at the Kwara North House in Ilorin and a follow-up visit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) state secretariat.
The Kwara North Elders Forum outlined the position in a communique signed by Ambassador Nurudeen Mohammed and Alhaji Othman Mohammed. The group said the next election offers a key chance to correct what it called a long-standing imbalance in the state’s political history.
The Forum said its demand is rooted in “equity, fairness, and justice,” noting that since 1999, the governorship has alternated between Kwara Central and Kwara South. Kwara North, they said, remains the only district yet to produce a governor.
They urged political leaders, party decision-makers, and voters in the other two districts to support their call. The communique described the appeal as a necessary correction rather than a political plea, adding that the district has maintained strong loyalty to the state.
The Forum said Kwara North is ready to offer “purposeful and inclusive” leadership and to build on the work of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration.
As part of its consultations, a delegation from the Kwara North Council of Elders met with APC State Chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi. They asked the party to zone its 2027 governorship ticket to the district, saying the move would support unity and strengthen the APC’s reach across the state.
According to the Forum, Fagbemi acknowledged the concerns raised and said the party would give “careful consideration” to the request.
The meeting and party visit drew leaders from all five local government areas in Kwara North, including former and current lawmakers, council chairmen, commissioners, advisers, and other party figures.
The Forum said the turnout showed a united stance. They repeated their position that the next governor should come from Kwara North, saying, “Equity delayed is justice denied.”
